Like Hearst he dispatches employees all over the world to bring back archeological treasures for his own vast, private museum. January is a mixed-race girl being raised on the luxurious Vermont estate of the wealthy William Cornelius Locke, an early 20th-century robber baron in the mold of J.P. The ten thousand doors of the title are actual portals to other realities, scattered all over the globe, one of which is discovered by the main narrator, January Scaller, when she is just seven years old. Essentially, Harrow combines the conventions of portal fantasy with a version of parallel-worlds SF, but both are subsumed to her main concern, which is the liberating potential of words and stories. Harrow’s remarkable first novel, The Ten Thousand Doors of January, but for me to explain further might compromise some of the readerly pleasures of unfolding Harrow’s multilayered, origami-like narrative. The idea of locking out historical change in order to preserve a particular version of male hegemony is an important theme in Alix E. The Ten Thousand Doors of January, Alix E. The men come to a niche and Montresor tells Fortunato that the Amontillado is within. He tells his victim that he has been insulted and Fortunato agrees to help him seek revenge. Once they arrive, Montresor takes Fortunato down into the catacombs. Fortunato is eager to verify the wine’s authenticity and insists on accompanying Montresor to his palazzo. Montresor meets Fortunato at a carnival and tells him that he has obtained a cask of Amontillado wine, which he believes is only a few drops short of being genuine. The story’s opening lines suggest that Montresor is plotting revenge: “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge.” The two men have not seen each other in some time, and Montresor claims that Fortunato has wounded him deeply. Montresor never names his victim, but he mentions that they were once close friends. The story is set in an unspecified year and place in Italy. The Cask of Amontillado, a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, is the story of a man named Montresor who takes revenge on his one-time friend, Fortunato. Kim then admits that just before dying, his father predicted that Kim would find a "red bull on a green field." The lama suggests that Kim journey with him to Ambala to search for the red bull, and although Kim is intrigued by the holy man, he tells Red Beard that he would rather travel with him to Benares. After the elderly man reveals that he is a lama from Tibet on a mission to find the "River of the Arrow," Kim offers to beg for him as his "chela," or disciple. The next day, on the street, Kim notices an oddly dressed priest and, curious, asks him about his background. Unknown to Kim, Laluli is plotting with Hassan Bey and other Russian-backed rebels who have been trying to foment war with the British-run Indian government, and plans to steal a document from Red Beard, which shows the five points at which the rebels plan to attack the English Army. Through Kim, the womanizing Red Beard asks Laluli to meet him the following evening and she gladly accepts. One night, Kim delivers a message to the beautiful Laluli from Mahbub Ali, or "Red Beard," a spy for the British Secret Service who is posing as a horse trader. In 1885, in Lahour, India, Kim, a young, white street orphan, survives by begging and stealing while dressed like a native. Since then he has traveled widely around the world, preaching and sharing his testimony. In 1997 Brother Yun escaped from prison and left China a few months later, settling in Germany as a refugee. When they demanded his name and address, he replied “I am a heavenly man and my home is in heaven!” The nickname ‘heavenly man’ was given to him by the Christians he protected, and it has stuck since. On one occasion he refused to give his name to the authorities, which would have caused trouble for the other Christians with him. As a result of his bold witness (which God used to bring many thousands of people into His kingdom), he was arrested on numerous occasions, endured lengthy imprisonments four times, and experienced much brutal torture and persecution. These are social proof, which gives people a reason to listen to you content creation, which allows them to evaluate the quality of your ideas and your network, which allows your ideas to spread. I found plenty of useful techniques, from cultivating a trusted wingman to help promote you to others, to identifying commonalities with the people you’re seeking to influence so they’ll be more receptive to your message.Īs I came to realize, though, there are three foundational elements to getting your ideas understood and appreciated, elements that underlie everything else. In the course of researching my book Stand Out, I interviewed more than 50 top thought leaders across a variety of different fields to elicit best practices and commonalities.
